We're Back (for Real): May Schedule for the Glasgow Writers' Group
Online: 9 May | In-person: 23 May
Good afternoon everyone,
We had a long break form using this Substack for a lot of reasons. One is we’re still on Meetup, which means dual management which is complicated and tiring. Two is that Substack has a lot of valid criticism and we were considering alternatives. With most of our membership still on Meetup, interesting in Substack fell considerably. But with few viable alternatives working out, we are back here.
So, the next online meeting will be 9 May, starting at 19:30 GMT, and then we’ll be meeting in person on 23 May with a start time of 19:00 GMT. Online meetings are hosted on the open-source video conferencing platform Jitsi, and the link to join will be send out as an e-mail-only announcement shortly before the meeting begins. In-person meetings take place at the Avant Garde on King Street in central Glasgow.
Submissions have been accepted for the 9 May meeting and will be distributed on Monday 6 May.
For the 23 May in-person meeting, send your pieces to gwgsubmissions@gmail.com by 23:59 on the Saturday before the meeting (18 May). They will be distributed to all subscribers the following Sunday (usually in the afternoon or evening).
New members must attend at least one meeting before their first submission. You may be asked to confirm you’ve attended and understand our rules before your submission is accepted.
When you submit, please make an effort to include the following:
Title of submission (can’t think of a good one? that’s okay, but at least tell us it’s untitled)
Name of author
Word count (soft maximum of 3000, it’s flexible if the total word count of all submissions for a meeting is under 12k)
A content warning if your piece contains explicit imagery, violence, discriminatory themes, or other sensitive content (mandatory where such content is included)
Do take a look at the complete submission guidelines linked below.
The link to join the video chat for an online meeting will be sent to all members subscribed to our mailing list an hour or two before the official start time. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any problems, we are checking our e-mails up to the start of a meeting in case anyone has technical difficulties.
Complete rules and guidelines for submissions and our meetings can be found here:
Remember, we accept all sorts of submissions. Want to share a short story, an excerpt of a longer piece, an essay, a poem, a script, a blog post? If it’s written, and it’s in English, we’re happy to accept it and offer what feedback we can.
We hope you are safe and well, and look forward to seeing you there!
Kind regards,
The Organisers
